Deaf Art

I have chosen to bring these pictures together to discuss Deaf culture. All of these images show some form of power to the community. The crayons show all the people who are part of the Deaf community and culture. It tells a story that all of these people matter and it does not matter what you are or who you are, you are family when you are part of this community. The next images I chose were some Deaf art pieces by Chuck Baird. He is a huge advocate of the culture and I think the way he uses his art skills to bring awareness is very strong and important. The fox image and of the man signing art with art supplies around him show how beautiful sign language is. It brings awareness that sign language is a language but it is also their culture. The last image pulls everything together. By replacing the eyes of a person with ears shows that their eyes are their ears. Even the deaf-blind portion of the community uses sign language. It is called tactile sign language and it is when they sign into another person's hands or into their hands and they feel what their hands are doing to communicate. The other important part of this image is that their mouth is under water. They do not need to use their voice if they are not comfortable with it. Their hands do the talking and their ears do the seeing. I think all of these images come together wonderfully to show why it is important to have Deaf education and why it should be discussed.
