ABOUT

My name is Caitlin Phillips and I am a student at Salt Lake Community College. I have two beautiful rabbits and I am currently working at a local high school in their childcare program. I hope to receive my Associates degree and then transfer to Utah Valley University to get a Bachelors in American Sign Language and Deaf studies

Education is something many people in the United States do not think twice about. Many schools have the right amount of resources, information, and educators to help the students in the best way possible. Utah especially has a strong culture towards education. We are very aware of what we need in schools and fight to get the best of the best for our students. However, Deaf education is something that tends to go unnoticed. Whether it is a Deaf child that does not have access to an interpreter in a mainstream school or a lack of funding in a Deaf school.

As a future educator it is hard to hear stories of how Deaf schools are run and what they may lack. Many of these students read at a third grade level in high school because of the lack of resources and proper educators/resources that they need. These students need just as much support and attention than any other student and yet they do not receive it. My hope with this website is to bring awareness to some of these issues so we can collectively make a change and improve on this.

This website is dedicated to giving information about the importance of Deaf education and the community that comes with it. There is a narrative about Gallaudet University, the first Deaf college in America, a profile with a current ASL teacher, and a proposal argument on cochlear implants. There are also various smaller pieces that relate to the issue of Deaf education in Utah. While education is my main issue, I have integrated pieces of Deaf culture and community to show how important it is for them to get the support in education that other public schools receive. While it will take many people to make the change and much more than these few pieces that I have prepared for you, it is a start. Help me inform others on the importance of Deaf education to improve it for future students.
